Thornton Construction proudly completed this new two-story K-8 school, which serves as a prototype for other Miami-Dade County Public School facilities and was funded under the county’s General Obligation Bond (GOB) program. Dr. Toni Bilbao Preparatory Academy opened its doors for the 2017-2018 school year welcoming Kindergarten through 5th grade students, and ultimately accepting students up to 8th grade. The new Dr. Toni Bilbao Preparatory Academy was built on a green site and features 37 classrooms, multiple offices, media center, music, arts, language, and discovery labs, and a dining/multi-purpose area. Two basketball/volleyball courts, two playfields, a PE shelter, and a total of 62-parking spaces were also part of the project scope.

Recently, Dr. Toni Bilbao Preparatory Academy was announced Florida Educational Facilities Planners’ Association, Inc. (FEFPA) 2018 Architectural Showcase Winner, under the Middle Schools category. Entries were evaluated based on the following criteria: Innovative Response To Educational Program; Aesthetics And Use of Materials; Flexibility For Community Use; Technology Provisions; Green Design; Relationship of Spaces and Expandability; and Site Development.
